This year the winter spirit week Ice Fest was held the second week of January with a pep rally the Friday before. The winter spirit week had been held in previous years, but the Ice Fest Pep rally was a new event. It was also the first time a pep rally, other than Homecoming, was mandatory for high school students.
Senior Kiran Saund, a member of SGA for four years, said it was a difficult process to get a new mandatory event like this.
“You need to get the idea itself approved by administrators, and then you need to convince Mr. Meier that this is worth the school’s time,” SGA sponsor Daniel Clements said.
The decision to make this a mandatory pep rally came from the SGA’s desire to garner more school spirit after homecoming, Clements said, especially for winter and spring sports.
“After homecoming, there aren’t as many school spirit events to get everyone together. It feels like the school spirit vanishes after the fall,” Saund said.
Clements said this most recent pep rally was a little short and hopes to include more activities in the future. Saund said that SGA hopes more spirit events during school are included next year to maintain the level of spirit that students feel during homecoming.
