Valor Dictus

Editorial Policy

Valor Dictus, the high school student news organization at Robinson Secondary School and all its publications, including valor-dictus.com, the Valor Dictus print publication and Valor Dictus on Twitter and Snapchat @valordictusnews and @valordictus, serve as public forums. The print edition is published 4-6 times per year. A student editorial board comprised of an editor-in-chief, managing editor, production editor and business manager make final decisions regarding content.

Unsigned editorials express the majority opinion of the newspaper staff enrolled in the Journalism 2-4 class. The staff holds regular class meetings to discuss the editorial’s content. The editor-in-chief writes the first draft of the staff editorial, which the staff reads and discusses before the editor-in-chief returns to the draft to make revisions to reflect the staff’s majority opinion. Staff editorials focus on topics that directly affect our community. These are often topics specific to Robinson Secondary School, but when appropriate the staff editorial may examine city, state, national or international issues that affect our readers.

An editorial cartoon may accompany the staff editorial. A staff cartoonist designs the cartoon to reflect the opinion expressed in the staff editorial. The editorial board reviews cartoon submissions to determine whether the cartoon is appropriate for publication.

Signed opinion columns, guest submissions and letters to the editor represent the opinions of the writers and not necessarily those of the staff. The Valor Dictus staff welcomes guest columnist submissions and letters to the editor. Guest columnist submissions should be no more than 500 words in length and letters to the editor should be no more than 200 words in length. Guest columns and letters must be signed with the author’s full name, title, e-mail and phone contact information, and Twitter handle if possible.

Guest columns and letters to the editor may be emailed to [email protected] A staff member will contact the writer to verify authorship before publication.

The Valor Dictus staff reserves the right to edit submissions for length, content, accuracy, clarity and grammar. Acceptance of a submission is not a guarantee of publication. Guest columns and letters to the editor are subject to the same laws governing obscenity and libel that apply to all other content of the paper.
