Mike Evans is a Wide receiver for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who has had a very prolific career. Since being drafted in 2014 from Texas A&M, he has never had a receiving season with under 1000 yards, a very impressive feat from any receiver. At age 32, Evans has currently tied the NFL record for most consecutive 1000 yard seasons, with 11 seasons recorded so far. If he surpasses that mark again this year, he would pass legendary wide receiver Jerry Rice for the most consecutive 1000 yard seasons of all time. But will he?
Mike Evans is only 32 years old, with arguably another year or two until he really begins to have his stats suffer from his age, but it’s about more than that. The Buccaneers also made it a point this season to draft former Ohio State wide receiver Emeka Egbuka in the first round. Throughout the past 3 weeks, he’s been a touchdown machine. Egbuka currently has 14 catches, 181 yards, and 3 touchdowns in 3 games played. Evans, on the other hand, has been fighting for targets against Egbuka, with 14 receptions for 140 yards and one touchdown.
While Egbuka being almost one for one with Evans is worrying enough for his record, Chris Godwin Jr. hasn’t even played yet this year. Godwin Jr. has been a wide receiver for several years with the Buccaneers, and since he’s currently out (but set to come back in a few weeks), Evans will have even more competition for his twelfth 1000 yard season.
So will Mike hit his record? The Buccaneers schedule will dictate a lot of that. Tampa Bay has several difficult games coming up, including the Eagles, Lions, and Seahawks. But it’s also important to keep in mind that they play both the Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints twice before the end of the year, which shouldn’t pose too much of a problem for the Buccaneers. While no one can say for sure, if Evans keeps up his current pace, it’s more than likely that he will get his record-breaking twelfth 1000 yard season.
