It all started on our track field, Rob Muzzio who was a student at Robinson ran track runner for 15 years and attended the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona Spain.

Muzzio joined track and field his freshman year. He was one of the best runners and sprinters at the time with much practice and dedication into it. His coach was Coach Hines, Muzzio said Hines was a great inspiration for him and encouraged him to do better and to take the right paths.

“Each year it got better and better, but with all the hard work you have to really want it,” Muzzio said.

After senior year Muzzio graduated from our school and attended and ran for George Mason University. His coach at GMU was Coach Seemuller which trained him for the Olympics. Muzzio made the Olympic Team after he had graduated from GMU.

“I was very fortunate to have a lot of encouragement and support from many people and I couldn’t have done it without their help,” Muzzio said.

Muzzio qualified for the U.S. Olympic trials, and placed in the top three to make the team.

“My main drive to make the Olympic team came from within, I worked hard every day to reach my potential,” Muzzio said.

He represented the United States in the decathlon event, and placed fifth. Muzzio also is the only decathlete in NCAA history to win back to back NCAA Division I decathlon titles.  He was the first decathlete in U.S. history to make three World Championship teams with 11 scores over 8000 points.

“During the Olympics, the decathlon would start from 8 a.m. and we would finish at 10 p.m. it was a time of our lives and was one of the most exciting events where the world is watching you,” Muzzio said.

As of right now Muzzio does not run for a team but instead he actively coaches the pole vaulters in both Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field. An Olympian champion at our school has an inspiration on many students, dreams can come true here at our school and this can be you too.
