As you walk through the hallways of school, you start to notice that fashion goes beyond clothing; it is a way of expressing yourself, your mood, and at times, even serves as a sense of comfort. You wonder, “What makes students pick what they wear every morning?” or if comfort is truly the biggest factor when making an outfit for school. To further understand their daily clothing choices, I interviewed three students to understand their taste in fashion as well as some of the important factors that they consider before heading to school.
Abby, who’s currently a 10th grader this year, explained how choosing her outfits in the morning usually depends on her mood. “Sometimes I come up with matching pieces or coordinating colors, but other times whatever is easiest works,” she explained. When asked what her personal style is, she replied “I would describe my style as y2k. Comfortable and additionally casual.” Comfort, she says, is always first and foremost–”If I’m not comfortable, then I won’t concentrate.”
Another 10th-grader by the name of Natanya expressed how she usually plans her outfits ahead of time. By doing this,” it reduces my stress in the mornings, as I like putting my own spin on current trends,” she added. . As for her own style, she described it as “basic brandy melville”. While comfort is often considered, it isn’t always a main factor. “Sometimes I’ll wear an outfit that isn’t as comfortable, I will go for how it looks more than it feels.”
The last student that I interviewed was 10th grader Elle who had a unique style.. When I talked to her she said, “I normally wear pins on my jackets to express myself. On some days I will come with skirts and dresses.” Her aesthetic however, is more “Creative and expressive with no care for typical comfort”. Although she doesn’t dress for her own comfortability, she feels the most confident when she dresses in a way that shows who she really is. “I like feeling aligned with my creativity,” she said– “but I won’t wear something that’s basic, I try to aim for accessories..always.”
After interviewing these three students, it showed how each and every person has their own sense of individuality when it comes to fashion. . For some, it’s strictly for functionality and comfortability, but for others, it’s a way to express their creativity and interests. Regardless of style, fashion seems to be a big factor of how students portray themselves throughout the school day.
