Staffin Scores for Field Hockey

Lisa Staffin was Athlete of the Month in September.

Sophomore field hockey player Lisa Staffin was one of the first female athletes honored this academic year when she was named Female Athlete of the Month for September.

Staffin used to play soccer, but gave that up for what she considered a bigger challenge in field hockey. “I like running, so I like field sports,” she said. “I like how in field hockey there are just so many skills. In soccer you just dribble, pass and shoot, but in field hockey there are all these different skills since it’s a stick and a ball. There are so many moves. I like learning new things that I can do.”

But Lindsey Arnsmeyer, varsity field hockey coach, said it wasn’t just Staffin’s skill on the field that made her a great candidate for athlete of the month. Arnsmeyer said she nominated Staffin because of her skill, leadership, sportsmanship and overall performance.  Staffin plays midfield, and last year was one of three freshman on the team.

“She just has this sort of confidence about herself that most sophomores or even freshman last year didn’t have,” said Arnsmeyer. “She’s a very good leader on the field. She plays every single minute of every single field hockey game. I thought she was a great candidate for athlete of the month.”
