Middle School Medallion Heads Online

May 23, 2016

The Medallion, Robinson’s middle school newspaper, has officially printed its last print edition and was now an entirely online news source. “I switched over to online because I don’t feel like print is how this generation of students reach their news,” said Adrienne Forte, the middle school journalism teacher. “I noticed that when I distributed the newspaper, kids weren’t picking it up or reading it anymore and I was ending up with large quantities left over. Newspapers were expensive to print and it seemed like a waste of money if kids weren’t reading the news anymore in this way.”

The website, medalliononline.com, will be regularly updated with student work. It will offer the opportunity for more timely news and a greater number of published articles. “We can now have colors and graphs and videos. Videos are difficult to show on paper,” said seventh grader Erin Jones. “I think it’s a good idea because it’s easier to find and read. It’s also a lot of fun because family far away can read it and you don’t have to ship them the paper.”

Seventh grader Ryan Kiely said, “I think it’s a good idea because our parents can see it more often and also students don’t have to wait for only one a semester, they can see each article as it goes up. Also, there’s more variety, you can do infographics and listicles.”
